NTHK focuses on six causes, read the blogs below to find out our activities:
Orphan children
NTHK regularly supports the Orphanage of Erbil which belongs to the Ministry of Social Affairs of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq. This is done on request of the Minister, Mrs. Kwestan Maarouf and/or the Governor of Erbil Mr. Omed Khoshnaw. The work is done together with the director of the orphanage Mr XYZ.

Each action is for 40-50 children, boys and girls of different backgrounds. Some are displaced kids from the southern part of the country or Syria or Iran.
NTHK provides sets of clothes and shoes, and daily necessities, sometimes some toys or a little sum of money for their guardians to spend on individual necessities. Each action costs $2,000. NTHK knows suppliers that provide the items at a reduced cost. The work is done with volunteers.
The handover of the gifts is combined with a little party for the children, so they enjoy themselves but also get to know the volunteers that are involved. This interaction should convey to the children a sense of safety and reassurance that there are others outside the orphanage that care about them.
NTHK wants to do this action once a quarter and during important holidays. We also want to expand beyond Erbil when there are more funds.
Women and their children in prison
In 2022 NTHK started to provide support to mothers with young children who are in jail. This support is provided to the Women and Juveniles Reform Prison in Erbil which is affiliated with the Ministry of Social Affairs upon request of the Erbil governor.

The prison houses around 150 mothers and their children. They often have no outside support, sometimes they are foreigners like Asian domestic helpers.
NTHK provided clothes, shoes and other essentials. These actions are organized in coordination with the director of the prison Mr. Tayeb Abdul-Aziz Ahmed who highly appreciates NTHK and its Dutch donors for this humanitarian gesture for this invisible, forgotten, very vulnerable group.
NTHK intends to repeat this action regularly but also extend its aid to support the upbringing, schooling of the kids and the rehabilitation of their mothers for when their time is done. For that extension we are coordinating with Restoring Hope, mrs. Ramzia Zana.
Each handout costs around $4,500. Here too, NTHK works with suppliers that provide goods at minimal cost. Please support us to continue doing this work.
Children with chronic health conditions
This is for children with blood disorders or heart diseases, for example.
In these actions we improve the lives of children, for example by covering their expences by letting them stay in the Thalassemia Center in Erbil for treatment, or by financing their medication/therapy. NTHK also assists children in seeking treatment and hospitalisation abroad.

Like with other target groups NTHK is fairly good at providing clothes and shoes and other life necessities. We do that for groups of 35-50 children. Sometimes we assist children and their parents to travel to the hospital for blood transfusions. The hospitals are sometimes short of critical medications and we use our international network to identify suppliers. The same network helps in finding options for treatment abroad. In the last action we act more as an information broker rather than financier.
We do this work upon demand from the Ministry of Health and the directors of the relevant hospitals. There is always need for more. Particularly sending of children (and a parent) abroad for treatment has been hampered by COVID-19. A donation of $2.000 would go a long way to provide a week’s provision of daily necessities. The other actions are more difficult to budget. Any contribution, small or large, or network is welcome.
Support to women’s shelters.
NTHK supported Erbil Women’s Shelter Centre in 2022 and 2023. The centre is affiliated to the Ministry of Social Affairs of the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq. It is similar to the Dutch ‘Blijf van mijn Lijf‘ homes. They provide a safe place to stay for women with problems at home like domestic violence or divorce.

NTHK provides clothes, shoes and other items for around 100 women, young and old, from different backgrounds. Each time it is a cost of around $1,500. The more funds we receive, the more women can benefit. The donations are organized by Mr. Azad and some of our female volunteers, at no transaction cost. Ms. Srwah, Head of the Erbil Shelter Centre, thanks NTHK for its assistance. Please donate for NTHK to continue this and other charitable work to better protect women’s rights in our society. We hope that you understand that we cannot illustrate this work with photos due to the confidential nature of this action. More information can be provided upon donor’s request.
Refugee children outside the camps
Since the end of 2021, NTHK developed quite a track record in providing humanitarian assistance to refugees and families with children, in and outside the refugee camps. While the camps are reasonably well catered for, by international organisations, there are some gaps like the provision of petroleum heaters and blankets in the winter of 2021/22.

We take great care to include people from inside Iraq (IDP) and from outside Iraq (many from Syria and some from Iran). They are of Arab, Kurdish, Christian or Yezidi descent.
We provide basic necessities like food, daily necessities, shoes. We bring these goods to where the beneficiaries are. NTHK has grown a habit to invite refugee children to a party during occasions like Newroz, Eid al Fitr, Christmas and/or New Year. We sometimes give the children small presents.
We want to go much further by becoming involved in health care, education, psychosocial assistance.
As with all activities, NTHK is assisted by volunteers mostly from Enkawa and by local suppliers, at reduced prices. Our activities are very cost efficient. Please donate for this activity.
Community events
NTHK likes to organize parties for groups of children, to break their isolation, to give them a treat, to make them feel that others care about them. We invite them to parties, sometimes outside in a garden, sometimes in party halls with live music with famous artists, dance and songs by children, a Kurdish dance for adults, and food.

NTHK likes to bring different people together. On the occasion of the Kurdish New Year (Newroz), the Holy Ramadan (iftar), Easter and Christmas we organize celebrations inviting representatives of Kurdish society, like the governor of Erbil, the mayors of Erbil and Ankawa, representatives of Ministries of Social Affairs, Health, Religious matters, of various faiths and cultures in the Kurdish, NGOs. Participants show mutual respect towards each other’s cultures and religious beliefs, greet and get to adversaries. Children, their future is of common interest to everybody. It is a celebration of the multicultural, tolerant society that the Kurdistan region should be. Participants are invited from all parts of Kurdistan. Erbil but also Dohuk, Suleimani even Kirkuk or Mosul.
We organize this in venues that like to support such events and charge reduced costs. Kurdish and Iraqi business people are usually interested to support these events.
